Problems with American Math Education

As you read about Common Core math standards you have to ask yourself, “What are they trying to do to our children?”  The new standards introduce algebraic thinking in Kindergarten – long before children are capable of abstract thinking – when they should be just beginning to memorize math facts. What a way to make a child start there education hating math and feeling frustrated…before seven years of age!  But it doesn’t stop there; Common Core Standards would also deny eighth-graders the opportunity to take Algebra, reserving that for ninth grade and making it almost impossible to compete on the world stage where most high school youth are taking Calculus by their senior year. http://dailycaller.com/2013/02/08/california-no-longer-requiring-eighth-graders-to-take-algebra/    I found a website that gives one math tutor’s opinion on America’s math problem. Compare what they have to say with the direction Common Core is taking us:  http://www.sensible-math-education.com/american-math-education.htm
