And when students get jobs building bridges over dangerous waterways, will the most important thing be that they tried their best and calculated the first few steps right? At what point does accuracy matter? Please, teachers, teach the actual algorithms and ignore what you are being told in Common Core development classes.
It’s worth pointing out that if you know what you’re doing, you will get the right answer anyway.
As an engineering student in college I would have been much better prepared for upper level math classes had I learned math at a more concrete level as a child. Algorithms are great for accuracy and speed, but if you don’t understand how they work it can inhibit your ability to understand more complex concepts.
